Dr. Leslie Armeniox was featured in a front page story on childhood obesity (They're not going to outlive their parents") in the Sunday edition of the News and Record, September 6, 2009. Leslie is Director of Get Healthy Guilford.

Janet Beck recently published a book entitled Creating the John Brown Legend: Emerson, Thoreau, Douglass, Child and Higginson in Defense of the Raid on Harpers Ferry (Mcgarland 2009). She currently teaches English and advises in the Student Support Services Program at Appalachian State University.

Dr. Paige Bentley Greason and Dr. Craig S. Cashwell recently had a publication on "Mindfulness and counseling self-efficacy: The mediating role of attention and empathy. This article was published in the Counselor Education and Supervision, 2009, vol. 49, 2-19.

Dr. David Bergen has been promoted to full professor at High Point University.

Jennifer and Ryan Brigman announce the birth of their son, Seraph Meadows Brigman (see Isaiah 6:1-7). He was born May 24, 2009, at 7:32 a.m. at home and completely naturally in our garden tub after only 8 hours of labor! It was totally an intense experience! He weighed in at 6 lbs, 9 ozs. and is 19 1/4 inches long. He looks absolutely nothing like Jennifer, but is a close of his father, complete with a head full of ebany hear and a dimpeled chin!

Dr. Lori Brown is now an elementary school counselor at Topsail Elementary School in Pender County.

Dr. Craig Cashwell and Dr. Scott Young - "Advanced skills in the spiritual dimensions of counseling: Experiential techniques for enhancing counseling practice." - will be featured in several pre-conference learning institutes at the upcoming ACA conference in Charlotte.

Dr. Naiyana Chantarabunchorn is now teaching as an adjunct at Lynn University in boca Raton, FL. She still maintains her fulltime position at a community mental health facility where she is the senior therapist and has both clinical and operational roles.

Dr. Elysia Clemens and Dr. Laura Welfare have been awarded a research grant from the Stanford Center on Adolescence. The grant is titled “Facilitating the Development of Purpose: Evidence for the Effectiveness of a Group Counseling Intervention with Middle School Adolescents.”

Angel Coldiron became a Licensed Professional Counselor on December 1, 2008. She has made recent contributions to a book for teenage adoptees entitled "Pieces of Me: Who Do I Want to Be?" that will be published by EMK Press in the spring.

Dr. Suzanne Degges-White was recently promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in the counseling program at Purdue University Calumet.

Dr. Brian Dew was featured in a recent A&E program about the explosion of meth use in Atlanta, addictions, and treatment.

Dr. Thomas Dodson is highlighted in the Saint Xavier Magazine - Spring 2009 issue. Dr. Michael Garrett is a candidate for President-elect of Assocation for Specialists in Group Work.

Dr. W. Bryce Hagedorn is the first author on the following March 2009 publication: When talking won't work: Implementing experiential group activities with addicted clients. The Journal for Specialists in Group Work, 34 , 43-67.

Kelly Heritage and her husband welcomed their second baby girl on August 24, 2009. Taylor McKeel weighed in at 6 lbs 12 oz and was 21 inches long.

Linda Hileman has acquired her LPC and is now working at Family Service of the Piedmont in High Point as a Substance Abuse counselor. Dr. Craig Cashwell is co-author of "Professional identity: ACES, CACREP, NBCC share concerns with ASCA." Dr. E.J. Essic shares her goals for the year as President of the International Association of Addictions and Offender Counselors.

Connie Johnston (2003) has received her LPC and is working at Central Piedmont Community College as a career counselor.

Scott Milman, Director of Auxiliary Business Operations at UNCG, is serving as Chair of the UNCG Staff Senate this year.

Dr. Claire Usher Miner became a Certified Gottman Couples Therapist in June 2008. She has been in private practice in Austin, TX since 1996. Claire also works as a career coach for Transportatation recent SACES conference.

Christine Mulcahywas recently hired as a Community Support Professional/Qualified Professional at Right Direction in Durham, NC.

Amanda Ohlms is now an in-home therapist for the Augusta league of Therapists, based in Waynesboro, VA.

Christine Stuart Pritchard is now working at the University of Michigan as Hall Director for the 4th largest residence hall in the country. She resides there with her wife Nichole and their daughter Briana.

Sarah Weese Powell '06 recently married Stan Powell on October 17th, 2009. The couple are happily settling into married life at the beach with their dog, Cato.

Joylynn Henning Rasmussen and her husband Thor Rasmussen are moving back to their home state of Michigan in late November. They are expecting their first child, a boy, in early February.

Justine Reel recently released the book, The Hidden Faces of Eating Disorders and Body Image.

Dr. Clay Rowell and Dr. James Benshoff (CED faculty member), recently had a study published in the September 2008 issue of Counselor Education and Supervision. It is featured in the column "Spotlight on Journals: Research that Informs Education."

Dr. Mark Scholl is now a Professor in the counselor education program at East Carolina University.

Wendi Schweiger sucessfully defended her dissertation "Special needs adoptive families: A study of social supports and family
functioning," on November 3. Wendi will be hooded at the December 2008 graduation.

Dr. Matthew Shurts, Assistant Professor at Montclair State University, just received reappointment with tenure.

Dr. Stephen Shumate was recently promoted to Professor. He is Chair of the Department of Rehabilitation and Counseling at the University of Wisconsin-Stout.

Dr. Allison Smith is the recipient of the C-AHEAD Outstanding Humanistic Dissertation Award.

Eric Spencer was interviewed on WFMY News 2 (6 o'clock) on March 12, 2009, concerning the effects of the economic situation on couples and families.

Dr. Sarah Thiessen and her husband Doug, welcomed their fifth child on November 5, 2008. Clara Noelle will join sister Hannah (11), brother Taylor (9), and sisters Heidi (5) and Charlotte (24 months). Sarah keeps very busy by homeschooling and caring for the children at home.

Catherine Tucker returned to school in 2003 after 9 years of being a school counselor in NC. She earned her Ph.D. in Counselor Education at the University of Florida in 2007, and is now teaching in the counseling programs at Indiana State University.

Dr. Joshua Watson is a candidate for President-elect of the Association for Assessment in Counseling and Education.

Sarah Wesse was recently engaged to her boyfriend of four years, Stan Powell. They are planning an October 2009 wedding at the coast. They also just purchased and moved into their first home! Additionally, Sarah has recently completed all licensure hours and supervision, and will be receiving her LPC upon the Board's final review.

Dr. Rebecca Withrow started her own private practice in Asheville, NC in January, 2008.

Dr. Amy Wood is now Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Lifelong Learning, as well as chair of the counseling program, at Lenoir Rhyne University.

Deidre (Pinnix) Yancey, her husband Danny, and their son Christopher welcomed a baby girl, Olivia Danielle Yancey, born November 6, 2008.
